Embroidering Baby Onesies

I’m at that age where I have lots of friends having babies. I knew I wanted to embroider some onesies for these new parents, but I couldn’t figure out what age/size would be the best. Then I hit upon a great idea. Why not by a 4-pack of 0-3 months, another for 3-6 months, and another for 6-9 months… and then combine them into 4 gift sets with 3 embroidered pieces each? This way the new baby can where my designs for a whole 9 months! I picked up my onesies packs from Target today, they’re about $10 each with 3 or 4 pieces per pack. This adds up to about $10 per gift plus the embroidery work, not too shabby. On a recommendation from another blog I went with the Gerber Organic onesies, I’ll let you know how this works out and of course I’ll be posting the cute pictures of the onesies once they’re embroidered.

P & S Fabrics – A great resource in Downtown, Manhattan

Today I finally managed to sneak away during lunch and check out P&S Fabrics.  They’re located at 360 Broadway @ Franklin Street.  I’ve added a trip report to the Where to Shop page, but here’s a list of what I found on offer:

  • hundreds of colors of DMC floss
  • DMC #3 floss
  • floss bobbins
  • marking pencils
  • fabric stabilizer
  • a large supply of wooden and plastic hoops (some oval shaped too)
  • needles
  • needle threaders

The regular DMC floss was 65¢ each, or 60¢ each if you buy more than 24, or 57¢ each if you pay cash.  I will definitely be spending more lunch breaks there in the future.

Textile shopping at Ikea

I had an idea to make some cocktail napkins for my parents so I went to Ikea in Red Hook to do a full scout of their textiles. I found cocktail napkins (4 for $2) and more. I’ve added a trip report to the Where to Shop page, but here’s a list of what I found on offer:

  • baby washcloths
  • baby blankets
  • baby sheets
  • baby bibs
  • furniture pillow cases
  • curtains
  • dish towels
  • sheets
  • hot pads
  • napkins (cocktail and regular sizes)
  • bath towels
  • laundry hamper bags

Everything was inexpensive, came in plain solid white or other colors, and seemed sturdy enough to hold our stitches.
