Gift for Baby Derek

A good friend of mine just had her second baby boy. His name is Derek and I stitched him up a little onesie and a bib using the Monkey Love pattern from Sublime Stitching.

Baby Whale

This week I finally had a chance to make a gift that I can actually blog about. My husband’s boss and his wife had their first baby. Since I’m pretty certain they don’t read this blog I can show you what I made for their new baby girl.

I found the whale pattern in the Deep Blue Sea set from Sew Lovely Embroidery. The folks over at Sew Lovely were nice enough to send that to me as a bonus pattern when the Pin-Ups patterns I ordered got lost in the mail. I wasn’t sure when I was ever going to embroider a sea horse or a shark, but then I spotted the whale which I think is just adorable.

The onesie is from Gerber. I don’t use a stabilizer on the onesies because I worry it would irritate the babies and I can never seam to tear it all off. I think the stitches come out okay without it.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner Bibs

These bibs are for some friends of ours that are not your typical parents. Breakfast looks the most delicious to me, how about you?

Barrel of Monkeys Onesie

This onesie is for a friend of mine from high school. She just had her second baby, a boy named Preston.

The pattern is from Sublime Stitching’s Monkey Love pattern. I love the Monkey Love patterns, but this one was maybe too detailed for a stretchy onesie. The monkey faces didn’t turn out very well.

Onesies Triplet for Zachary

This set has been in the works for a while and I finally finished it yesterday. Yeah! Hopefully the 0-3 month size will still fit little Zachary who was born in April.

Zachary’s mom is a huge fan of robots, so I knew I had to do a robot pattern. I found a great set of robot patterns on Etsy in the Floss Box. The robot was very challenging because I chose to use so many colors. It meant constantly tying and rethreading. If I had it to do over again, I would simplify the colors. But I think it looks nice.

Next I did the monkey from Jenny Hart’s Sublime Stitching pattern Monkey Love. I used a brick stitch on the belly which I think came out really cute.

Last up was the Brooklyn Bridge! I’ve been wanting to do a Brooklyn Bridge embroidery since I started embroidering. A few weeks ago, in honor of the 127th birthday of the bridge, Adam Suerte was offering $27 tattoos of the bridge and he released some flash examples. One of them was perfect for what I needed and turned into this onesie…

Onesies Triplet for Jonathan Lincoln

I just finished this onesies triplet for newborn Jonathan Lincoln today. This was timely due to his presidential name and the presidential subject I chose for one of the onesies. (Today was President’s Day here in the States.)

The triplet is made up of one 0-3 month, one 3-6 month, and one 6-9 month onesie, each with a different design. For the 0-3 month piece I picked a bar of music because Jonathan’s dad is a jazz musician. The music bar is from a pattern by Jenny Hart in her Sublime Stitching book.

For the 3-6 month piece I used the Monkey Love pattern from Sublime Stitching by Jenny Hart.

For the last piece, the 6-9 month, I couldn’t resist the idea of doing something related to Abraham Lincoln, after whom the baby is named. I found a great image online of Abraham Lincoln that was meant for a children’s coloring book, but worked perfectly for embroidery. I printed it out, trimmed it to just the head, and used tracing paper to tranfer the homemade pattern to the onesie.

For all of these pieces I used Gerber Organic onesies. The knit was very tight, so I had to use a smaller needle than I would have liked, and even then my needle was too big and made some big holes in the fabric. I chose not to use stabilizer because I only have iron-on/tear-away stabilizer, which I can never seem to tear away entirely and I didn’t want that left on the onesie to irritate the baby. I have some water soluble stabilizer on the way though and I think I will use it on the next set of onesies.

Embroidering Baby Onesies

I’m at that age where I have lots of friends having babies. I knew I wanted to embroider some onesies for these new parents, but I couldn’t figure out what age/size would be the best. Then I hit upon a great idea. Why not by a 4-pack of 0-3 months, another for 3-6 months, and another for 6-9 months… and then combine them into 4 gift sets with 3 embroidered pieces each? This way the new baby can where my designs for a whole 9 months! I picked up my onesies packs from Target today, they’re about $10 each with 3 or 4 pieces per pack. This adds up to about $10 per gift plus the embroidery work, not too shabby. On a recommendation from another blog I went with the Gerber Organic onesies, I’ll let you know how this works out and of course I’ll be posting the cute pictures of the onesies once they’re embroidered.
